We're a nonprofit helping Young Women of Color build brighter futures

About Black Girl on Campus

Black Girl on Campus is a Virginia-based nonprofit dedicated to helping young women of color realize their full potential and supporting them as they build their futures. As women of color, we know first-hand the many struggles that young women face, including limited confidence, lack of self-belief, pressure to conform to societal ideals, and the absence of role models.

Our goal is to help them overcome these barriers so they can realize their wildest ambitions. We aim to do this by mentoring and supporting them to discover their self-worth, increase their capacities, seize the opportunities around them, achieve their goals faster, and go further in life than they ever thought they could.

We partner with high schools, colleges, universities, and community organizations to provide young women of color with mentorship, development, and programming opportunities. We believe that through our structured intervention, we can help young women of color bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.

BGOC is here to change this narrative through mentoring to overcome barriers to their success.

Many young women of color struggle to be heard, seen, or understood

Born and raised in New York, Monica earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Albany. After graduation, she had a successful career in the entertainment industry, overseeing million-dollar projects for high-profile artists. In 2006, she landed a top position in a nonprofit organization in New York, achieving her dream of giving more in a professional service capacity.

During this period, Monica also volunteered her time at her place of worship as an American Sign Language Interpreter, Youth Ministry advisor, and grief support group leader. These roles exposed her to the struggles faced by young women of color, reminding her of the barriers she encountered while growing up.

In 2017, after over a decade of hearing parents say, “Can you talk to my child? They listen to you.” the idea for Black Girl of Campus (BGOC) began to take shape. Monica founded BGOC with the sole goal of helping young women of color ages 14- 24 overcome common barriers to success, develop professionally, excel personally, and realize their dreams.
